I think of an emergency fund less as idle cash and more as money that keeps me from having to sell investments at the worst possible time.

We recently had a job opening for a software engineer role and in less than 24 hours we had over 200 applicants. The job was closed shortly after. The market is very interesting right now. 

You see them producing PRs at that rate, but I would have my doubts about the quality and significance of those PRs at such a rate. 

If I have a thousand low quality PRs that get rejected in review instead of three high impact PRs that don’t, am I better off?

I think the biggest argument in favor of the long term viability of software engineering as a field is the lack of successful vibe coded projects. If vibe coding easily and quickly produced sellable products, where are all the huge new vibe coded products disrupting everything?

Instead it often seems more like iteratively telling the LLM to fix shit the LLM broke in a loop that doesn’t appear to be any faster than just doing it yourself.

The only sort of AI development that seems like it’s actually a time saver is expert developers using it to implement features they more or less already wrote the pseudo code for in the design documentation.

Figured I was listening to people's struggles anyway, may as well get paid $100 more an hour and stop pushing a poison as a coping mechanism while doing it- try and help people make actual lasting change. Public grad school to be a therapist in CA is $40k and it takes ~5 years to get licensed. Been depressed the whole time, but it's greatly managed with less alcohol and surrounding myself with people who care about mental health. Good luck. If you can, if even for a weekend, take some time off and search your soul for your next passion. Remember, other people with hardships did it, you can too. 🫶

Ignoring the quality of life from remote, post tax 10k is $7k. You save that easy on gas, clothes, wear and tear on your car. Eating from home; list goes on. Yes it’s actually financially better. 

The only real question is long term career advancement that could be stunted by remote vs in person.

The amount should be based on job security and monthly expenses - and if you’re a homeowner it should also account for big random repairs such as an AC unit. If you’re in a very secure job or assume you can find work quickly if you were fired, you can get away with less. If the opposite is true it should be larger.

I work in water treatment and this field is desperate for operators. A couple of my coworkers switched to this field in their 40s and got licensed. I make over 40 an hour in Ohio for reference. Great field great pay and the work isn’t too hard as long as you can pass a test it’s great 

See if you can live off that money while you max your 401k this calendar year. And do Roth 401k this year since with only a half year of income you’ll be in a low bracket

Econ major, worked on the business side of healthcare in my 20’s. Climbed corporate ladder for 6-7 years then drunkenly fell off of it. Kept falling hard - alcoholism, depression.

29 rehab, starting over. Job handling out flyers for a tree company, stick around and take on more responsibility, eventually get certified as an arborist 3 years later. Enjoy the industry but feels like a temporary thing.

33, move across country for wife’s job, decide to start trying to get back in corporate game (big mistake). 2 years of job searching before I find a job that lasts 1.5 yrs before they go belly up. Lose job, decide to become SAHD for new baby.

41, move back to old stomping grounds, get back into tree stuff with old boss. Get re-certified, dive in with both feet. Have success, add credentials, make a job change and more money. Challenge myself with new lines of work within tree industry… make another job change. Make 6 figure base salary with commissions going after public contracts and emergency work contracts. Have a blast.

Long story short - I had to start fresh at 30 and got into a new industry that **wasn’t in an office.** I enjoyed it, but fooled myself into thinking I needed to get back on corpo track. Finally got back into it at 40 with full heart and have had the best working years of my life in my 40’s.

OP, if you are an office job type guy, please please please consider working with your hands or in an outdoor industry. Baking, pet care, landscaping, woodwork, drone pilot… there are lots of interesting jobs with physical components that you may find passion for, and which I’ve discovered you can still make advancements in your career and find traditional success in an untraditional job/industry.

Yes. I will help them with each milestone they hit. Wedding, home buying, first child, if they hit financial hardship, if they want to start a business, etc… I want them to be successful and not struggle.

With a commute that long, I’d take a 25k pay cut to work from home.

I don’t know anyone else that has paid off their mortgage, family or friends.  Maybe an aunty and uncle but I never asked them directly.  It was anticlimactic bc I had to mail a cashier’s check. Right now my balance says 308 and I added some for a closing/recording fee and a few days interest. I will be FIRED— a few months after my bday. This is just another giant step forward. At one time, I said, I should throw a party when I pay it off. Now, I am not sure if I breathe a word of it - to my real friends bc everyone  
 says to play it cool. 😎 

Paid off my mortgage today

So I've directly and indirectly mentioned FIRE to a lot of people and never seem to get a positive reaction about it and it always made me wonder why everyone isn't actively seeking out this kind of lifestyle. 

I'm not FIREd yet, but for example: My sister and I were on a vacation and I just looked over and said "this is what life's all about, don't you wish everyday was like this ... relaxing, doing whatever you want. Blah blah. And she laughs and just says no. You have to work hard to play hard. When I pushed back with my desire to actually not work, she became sorta defensive and just scoffed at me. It didn't even occur to her that life can be just about being free and living on your own terms during our short years alive. This is a very common reaction. Is everyone just brainwashed? Am I crazy? Are we all crazy?

Why doesn't everyone want to FIRE?

I am doing an internship as a recepcionist, I started like two weeks ago. My manager approached me today and said that a customer told her l smelled very bad. The customer was very apologetic about it and my manager was very kind. I'm mortified, I had problems with hygiene before but I thought I was doing pretty good. The fact that all my coworkers could smell me stinking up the place is fucking me up. I'm going to up my higiene obviously but I can't bring myself to look them in the eye again knowing that they think of me as "that intern who stinks". I'm overanalyzing every interaction I had here. If I didn't still have 11 months of contract I would've probably quit on the spot. I was actually really liking working here and benefits and pay are good, but IDK how I can force myself to act normally after this.

How can I face my coworkers again after my manager informed me I smell bad?

I have a paid off 2014 Toyota Corolla with 115k miles. Knock on wood it works great and has no issues. I just got a tune up and got all new belts, spark plugs, and other routine maintenance parts replaced and have kept up with oil changes.

This car has saved me so much money I’ve planned on keeping it for as long as possible and hopefully saving enough cash to buy a new vehicle outright when that time comes.

By running a car into the ground, do people literally wait until the day the car breaks down and makes you miss work, or do you get rid of once it starts wearing down? My fear would be waiting until you have a junker worth nothing, but I suppose it’s also the opportunity cost of what you’re saving without having a car payment. 

How does “driving a car into the ground” really work?

I'm 65 with a basic teachers pension that so far I've done well in the five years since I've retired. I have about $150,000 in liquid assets, and $50,000 worth of gold. I'm a widower who unfortunately doesn't have a family so it's only me. I decided to wait until 67 to claim social security, but now I'm thinking my best move would be to burn through 100 Grand or so of my liquid assets and wait until 70. Is that a sound strategy? With the price of medical Care increasing as I age I don't want to surrender my liquid assets, but my days of tightening my belt for future benefit are running out and I would like to treat myself with things I've always dreamed of but I've never had the time to enjoy.

Dual income household and we’re both 32. I’ve been working for 10 years and my wife for 3 years as she just finished residency.

She started contributing to her 401k and is choosing the Roth 401k option because her hospital does a 10% match. She’s been maxing it out for as long as she can and has a decent amount built up.

I used a calculator and it says at this pace, she will have almost $10 million at age 65 with an 8% return.

That is tax free money that we can use as a checking account after age 59.5. Is it really that easy? I know that is in future dollars and converted to today’s money that’s less but still- we have other investments too.

Am I missing something obvious?

I currently make $27k and am essentially on call 24/7. I work in the travel industry, and I’ve developed significantly since I started. I manage client accounts, handle travel arrangements, and have specialized knowledge of our group/tour business that I’ve spent years developing.

The new owners have previously discussed increasing our salaries, giving us a portion of the commissions we generate, or giving us a portion of the revenue from the tour groups we put together. None of those conversations have gone anywhere or resulted in any changes.

Recently, a new employee no-called/no-showed for an entire week and was let go. My boss reposted the position (which is essentially the same position I currently hold) for **$38k–$50k.**

I make **$27k.**

I genuinely don't know how to process that. A potential new hire could walk into essentially my position making up to $23k more than I currently make, despite me having over two years of experience with the company and extensive knowledge of our systems, clients, and group business.

I know I'm not perfect and I don't think I'm irreplaceable, but I do believe I bring significant value to this company and have taken on responsibilities well beyond what I was doing when I started.

**What would you do in my position? Would you use this job posting as leverage to negotiate a significant raise, or would you take it as a sign that it's time to start looking elsewhere?**

Part of me feels guilty about leaving because I've invested so much time here and have built relationships with clients, but another part of me feels like I can't justify staying at $27k when the company itself is advertising my position at $38k–$50k.

Employers Offering New Hire $11k more than I Make for My Position ?

I’m considering moving for several reasons, and one of them is finding somewhere more affordable. However I’m wondering if most places in the U.S. are equally expensive when you adjust for how much people are being paid. I would be working service jobs (which often pay close to the minimum wage) and doing gig work if that makes any difference. 

Are U.S. cities with lower rent the same price as HCOL areas when you consider the typical market wage?

I work for a large Corp and PIPs have gotten more and more common as managers have to meet a quota every performance cycle. I feel like the culture has turned very toxic. People are not nice and it brings out the worst in some people who specialize in throwing coworkers under the bus and kissing up to management. It makes people very individualistic and you don’t feel like a team at all. 

Also I feel mentally exhausted all the time like it doesn’t really motivate me to work and it’s quite the opposite. I’m stressed and anxious coming in every day and I don’t feel any desire to put effort into a company that can fire me at any time. 

Anyone feel like PIP culture doesn’t improve efficiency?

I’m 23 and just started my first job out of college in Big 4 accounting. I make $94k/year (potential $10k CPA bonus) and have no debt. I currently have about $20k in a checking account.

Current setup:  
\- 401(k): contributing 10% (no employer match during my first year)  
\- Maxing out HSA  
\- Maxing out Roth IRA (Fidelity Freedom Index 2065)  
$1,300/month rent

I’m trying to figure out what to do with the $20k. I’m thinking I should keep some in checking for normal expenses, move some into a HYSA for an emergency fund, and potentially invest anything beyond that in a taxable brokerage.

How much would you keep in checking vs. HYSA vs. a taxable brokerage? Is there anything else I should prioritize first?

23-year-old with $20k in a checking account. What should I do with it?

I'm 40 and my career is dead. I've been out of a real job for 2.5 years and, hundreds of job applications later, I've hit a wall. It's not working.

It's time to try something new, pivot, rethink my path. But I'm in a fog -- this continued fruitless job search has taken a big toll on my mental health. I have no imagination for what I could possibly do. I don't even know what I *like* doing anymore.

I'm looking for anybody with a story of how they were able to start their careers over again later in life. Especially if you had to overcome depression and anxiety along the way.

Anybody find a new path at midlife?

I was laid off last year and found my current job about 4–5 months later. It was a 30% salary increase, putting me just over $100K. I was previously fully remote, but my current job is hybrid. 3 days in the office and 2 days at home. I’ve been here a year.

My boss is great and very flexible. She’s not a micromanager and lets me leave around 3 PM and finish my day at home so I can avoid some of the traffic. And allows me to work at home if I need to or have an emergency. The biggest downside is the commute. It’s about 1.5 hours each way on a typical day and involves driving, parking, taking a train, and then a 10-minute walk. My company does pay for the train, which is nice. On days when traffic is really bad, the commute can be even longer. The office is also open-concept, and I’ve realized I really don’t work well in that environment. I constantly find myself looking for quiet corners so I can actually focus, so I’m rarely even sitting at my desk. Also, because this role is new, I don’t have a lot of guidance from my boss.

I’m currently interviewing for a fully remote position that pays $10K less. I don’t have an offer yet, but the interviews seem to be going well and I want to be ready in case I have to make a decision.

From what I’ve seen, the new company seems to have a very flexible culture and employees generally seem to enjoy working there. There are bonuses, but salary increases and promotions don’t seem to happen as frequently, so I do see the $10K difference as potentially being more than just a short-term pay cut. Of course, I also know you never really know what a company is like until you actually work there.

My husband and I are also planning on conceiving our first child soon. His earnings can fluctuate as he owns two business, so I have the primary salary. So I don’t know of an extra 10k is more important when planning for a family or remote flexible work/no commute.

Any advice? honestly, on the days when traffic is really bad, I find myself thinking, “I’d probably take a $20K pay cut to never do this again” 😂 obviously I’m not actually trying to take a $20K pay cut, but it has made me question how much the commute is worth to me.

So its been around six month since the organization started onboarding all devs on a monitoring platform which captures all dev activity. Jira tickets, time logged on jira tickets, pull requests opened and merged, reviews done

Recently they published a report generated from this data, where all devs were ranked on all these factors, most important being pull requests merged in main line.

After this report HOD told everyone that ceo is saying anyone having less than 2 prs daily will be piped as they are not contributing enough. 

Is this normal, are there any other organizations doing the same?

Is the job market just cooked or am I doing something wrong? I need to get out of my job cause it causes me so much stress I started having panic attacks and insomnia and I had to see a mental health professional…at my job people are constantly laid off and disappearing.

Due to a combination of toxic politics with my product owner throwing me under the bus and getting stuck with bad projects I feel like I’m on the chopping block. I got a ‘meets’ at mid year but my boss told me verbally he was not happy.  

I have applied to hundreds of jobs got very few callbacks and zero offers. I went so far as to apply for jobs in lower paying industries like government and healthcare where the pay is less than half what I make and still nothing. Am I blacklisted or something? 4 years ago I got two offers in a month. I feel like I’m going crazy at this point…

Willing to take a 100k+ cut and still no job offers

M32, no kids. I currently have around 130k invested in ETFs and keep another 40k in my current account as a safety net. However, 40k in cash feels like quite a lot, and I'm wondering whether I'm being overly conservative.

Have you thought about giving your child or children a small portion of their eventual inheritance when they are in their 20’s to 30’s, rather than when you pass?   If you wait until you are ‘elderly’, and pass away, maybe 80-85 years old just as example.   The child may by 60 years old or so at that point.  I’m talking about something like $ 5-10 k.  My thinking is that it would help them so much more at that younger age, rather than when they may be nearing retirement age themselves.  I know everyone has different situations but I think a little advanced inheritance could help them buy a house, or a car, or help them stay home to raise their child, pay student loans, or any number of other things that may help them now.  What do you think?

I’m fucked up

After reading some similar posts, it seems like I don’t have it as bad as some, however it’s distracting and frustrating how constant it is, at least 10 times a day. He will walk to a corner do nothing as if we can’t hear him/think he left, then pass again. it’s bizarre and I’ve heard him say out loud to another manager before this is something he’s had conflict for at his last job, but it seemed like nothing came of it as far as his side. There’s nothing else over here, he just hovers. our computers face the wall and the opening to our cubes is directly behind our backs so I’d have to do a full turn to “see” him
