Make sure your goal of $1M by 65 will give you sufficient income to retire reasonably comfortably.  If you've done the math and you're good with it, then definitely you can take your foot off the gas.

Hey so every profession is terrible or hyper competitive or on the verge of collapse if you listen to naysayers instead of leaning into your strengths.

The dean of students was the professor of a foundations of inquiry course that was mandated in my school. She opted to teach this course to literally every freshman. The goal of the course was to hone in on the concept of grit. The ability to navigate through hardship with strength and grace to achieve a goal. It also taught us media literacy, how to think critically when presented with new information, and how to develop our unique voice with informed opinions. I’m very grateful for that class because it showed me just how many people are influenced by others’ opinions and how easy it is to be discouraged from the things you want.

I say all that to say, look inward. Stop asking for advice on what path YOU should choose. Only you know what you’re able to do. But realistically, with your background, the easiest and most aligned pathway for you is to become a teacher then when the political pendulum ultimately swings back, reconsider a career in academia. 

Open up an investment account right away if you don’t already have done so. You can use Vanguard, or Fidelity self managed account and pick an ETF like VTI and commit to X% (10% is common) of your income to be deposited with every paycheck. The key is to make this a habit so it feels natural as you increase your salary and you’ll be set for retirement. 

One of the biggest traps after graduation is reading career discussions online. Every profession's subreddit eventually becomes a support group for people having the worst week of their lives.

I think the whole point is that independence gives you the set of options. You can choose to work (whether paid or free). Period. And especially in areas that you're passionate about. 

You can use Edgar / sec.gov and keyword search. IE: "chips act" and set a date range. Mostly look for form 8k.

I'm in sales and am consistently overperforming against my revenue target. 

Yet I recently got put on a PIP because "there was concern about my process". 

Since we started the PIP my manager keeps telling me that he's seeing huge improvements and it's great that I'm back on track. 

The bullshit part? I haven't changed anything about my process except that I'm now documenting everything in a tracker.

Remember to keep applying for jobs even when you have a job. The best raises are when you job hop. dont stay in a job longer than 3 years. 

If i didnt job hop id still be making 55k but now i make 92k after 5 years. Bet you can get that 120 to 200k in 5 years if you do the same

Hello, everyone.  I received a windfall of around $3 million from my grandpa that passed away. I am 33 family of five living in a high cost of living area we rent we don’t own, between me and my spouse we bring in around 9000 a month with this windfall me and my wife are thinking about maybe moving out somewhere more rural buying a small house and maybe living off of the interest/investments of this money. We both have white collar jobs and hate our lives in it. Maybe with the move we are able to have simpler jobs that maybe we can’t live off of but mixed with the money from investments it can all equal out to a comfortable living. We live very much within our means atm and have savings and retirement funds but honestly are not where we would like to be with retirement. Is this a pipe dream? I know 3 million is a lot and we can stretch it way farther in a small town than living in one of the most expensive cities in the US. I know 3 million is a lot but not as much as it used to be 20 years ago. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Windfall and want to move somewhere rural, is it possible?

When I was in accumlating phase, I made about $200k and thought i needed $5m to RE based on the 4% rule.   I really didnt think much beyond that as i was so far off, and it was about saving as much as i could and investing.

Now that I am getting close to my RE target age, I redid my calcs and calculated that I have been spending about $7, $8k with health insurance included (more like $7.5k with aca subsidies included but that's another story)

So my RE number is really $2.25m on $7.5k spend.  Once i add in future SS that's coming in about 13 years, that number drops to about $2m.

This really depends on where you are in the FIRE journey, when you're accumlating, say in your 30's, you're just focused on hitting the number, and that number is usually based on what you're making as a shorthand (this is for the average fire aspiratant.)   But once I got close and dug into the details, that $5m i thought i needed when i was accumulating, really became $2m.    Some already will know this already, but some may not, especially if they are in the early innings of accumulation.

Why you need less to FIRE than what you think

I just saw someone posting that they were trying to start their fullstack journey and break into tech in 2026.

Over the past 3 years, 600k experienced tech workers were laid off and thrust into a market where demand was faltering.

According to data tracking platforms like Indeed, TrueUp, and Layoffs.fyi, active tech job openings plummeted by nearly 70% to 80% from their all-time pandemic peaks in early 2022 to the lowest points in late 2024 and early 2025.

There are literally people just trying to get started in this field and it blows my mind. Unless you have deep connections in the industry, it might be wise to steer clear until the bottleneck opens up (if it opens up).

Waves of graduates to an already saturated job market.

It’s been recently revealed a cousins of mine has “up and quit his job” in another state and is moving back to our podunk small town and buying a house for cash. This cousin has lived in a large metro area for 15 years working in tech adjacent field and living in a cheapo studio apartment. Cousin is mid 30s, no relationships, no kids, no splurges—just basic car and visiting family a few tones a year. 

it’s obvious this cousin FIREd right????  I keep telling family members I think this is what happened and no one —esp the old hairs—believe it. They are suggesting maybe cousin wants to re train and enter a trade or just have a change.

My mom wants to send $12,000 to family in Vietnam. Instead of just sending it all at once, she wants to split it across 3 different people at $4,000 each to stay under the $10,000 declaration threshold.

My gut is saying this practice is shady. My parents say it is fine and people do it all the time. I was wondering if this is something I should actually be worried about?

So unfortunately my first and last name are shared by a pornstar. It’s also a pretty distinct name, not a “Jane Smith” situation. She’s recently risen in popularity, and this has gone from being unfortunate but a little funny, to “oh shit the first three pages of results when you google my name are just this.”. 

We’re obviously different people if you’ve seen my face, but she’s another 20-something woman, and so I don’t think it’s immediately going to be obvious that I’m not her. I’ve also been asked about it by family friends, so I know people are seeing this. 

Might be a dumb question, but can I just go by my middle name professionally? Will that be an issue for paperwork later on (transcripts, references, etc)?

Still seems hard to believe. I’m almost 59M and my 53F wife is still working (175K/yr) for the next few years. Our NW just crossed the $4M mark and I’m drawing about 2.5% of our invested assets.

I told all the juniors in the office that I’m able to do this because I started saving and investing in my twenties. The $5,000 I struggled mightily to save in 1994 is now worth $100,000 or more.

Friday was my last day after 36 years of work…no idea what’s next.

I’m looking for some perspective and advice from people who’ve successfully paid off credit card debt.

Current situation:

Card 1: $13,600 balance at 27% APR

Card 2: $6,300 balance at 27% APR

Shared card I’m helping pay off: $2,500 balance at 25% APR

Total debt: approximately $22,400

I have basically stopped using my credit cards altogether for the past several months. I’m not adding meaningful new debt and I’m consistently paying more than the minimums every month (usually at least $100-$200 above minimum on each card).

The problem is that it feels like the balances barely move.

My estimated monthly income is around $6,000-$8,000 and my living expenses are around $5,000, although I need to sit down and calculate the exact numbers.

My credit score has fallen from around 750 to around 690 due to utilization.

At this point I’m trying to figure out:

Should I continue paying aggressively as-is?

Should I focus on one card and only make minimums on the others?

Should I look into a balance transfer?

Should I consider a personal loan for consolidation?

For anyone who’s been in a similar situation, what made the biggest difference for you?

$22k credit card debt, stopped using cards, still feels like I’m making no progress

I’m a premed student, I was recently fired from my old part time job for a stupid reason and had been looking for a new job in medical area for clinical hours. I got an interview and made it clear I had summer classes but can come in the afternoons and or these other days. She seemed okay with it as it was only temporary and these girls were going to medical school in august. First day I just watched someone and picked up on some stuff. Second day, I was put in training and had learned to use five tech machines in 3 hours and was able to completely do it on my own within the time frame. My trainers noted it had taken them weeks to even learn how to do it. I only got corrected for taking my phone out for three seconds (to write down a reminder) but that’s it. Today, as I’m about to leave for my first full day. She sends me a message essentially letting me go, and All she could tell me was “I don’t think this position is going to work out for you” and when I inquired why she stated “I don’t think you’re a right fit for the office” nothing else. I’m just so crushed and discouraged. The ladies I was with seemed nice, but I’m now struggling to find a medical job willing to train me. Especially the lack of money coming in. I did a medical assisting program online but have no in person training completed yet. 

Fired in two days for “not being a good fit”? What could this mean

It seems standard to take current expenses and assume that they will need 25X that to retire. While I think that is a great baseline, I’m trying to figure out where to adjust my retirement budget since expenses in retirement seem like they could differ completely. Examples I am thinking about:

I just finished an extended trip where I was going in and out of the Schengen zone, so multiple times going through immigration/security lines and being funneled through those madhouse duty free shopping areas (side note: it made me laugh that someone at the Barrajas airport decided that the duty free shop wasn’t crazy enough, so let’s add a DJ). Also at some airports, like Frankfurt, it can be a long trek to a connecting gate, not to mention if your gate then gets changed to another far-away gate. 

I’ve made the in-air experience as good as possible by buying first/business, but I’m wondering if there’s a way to use financial resources to avoid the drudge of lines, long walks, and crowds at the airport (I have no desire to fly private).

I have lounge memberships, which help somewhat (although many lounges are still pretty crowded). What do other FAT people do? I know some airlines have services that escort you part of the way - do those help? Any other tips?

Hello everyone,

I'm 32M and, despite my modest income of only around $50k, I have been very aggressive with retirement savings early in my career, and it's paid off shockingly well.  Between my Roth IRA and 401(k), I have about $172k saved.  It just hit me yesterday that I've reached the "crossover point," and I'm on track to have $1M (even adjusting for inflation) by 65, even if I don't contribute another penny.  I'm not married and have no children (hopefully one day), and not yet a homeowner.  

With all of this said, should I consider easing off the gas pedal on retirement savings and focus on other goals, such as a home down payment?  I know at my income level, homeownership seems out of the question barring marrying a wealthy woman, but I do stand to inherit a decent amount when my grandmother passes away (not that I'm rooting for that).

I'm far ahead of schedule with retirement savings.  Can I slow down contributions?

I recently graduated from college, which means I am in the middle of applying for jobs and thinking about my next immediate steps. But I’m also thinking longer term about what career I’d like to pursue and what kind of role I could see myself working in for decades. I studied history and English in college and was interested in becoming a US history professor, but the disastrous state of academia convinced me not to go that route.

As I research directions to go professionally, it seems like EVERY possible career option is advised against. Wanna be a teacher? Students are terrible, the pay is mediocre and administrators do little to support you. Wanna be a lawyer? You’ll take on monumental debt for cutthroat and draining work, competing for far fewer jobs than there are graduates. Nursing? You’ll with unruly and grotesque medical scenarios for medium pay. Business? Enter into a profession where AI is slowly replacing administrative positions. Finance? Same with business, but with more competition. Tech? Government? Media? Journalism? Archival work? Research? Listening to the noise online, it seems like every industry is dysfunctional beyond repair.

I’d be interested to hear what some professions are that people don’t think are terrible, hyper competitive or on the verge of collapse. Every time I have an idea for a career I think I would enjoy and be good at, I invariably come across a sea of naysayers who paint it as  impractical, stressful or unpleasant work. It’s making me discouraged about the future and the likelihood that I will find a career I am happy with. But I also know the internet provides a platform for many to air their grievances, so the general impression tends to be negative.

What jobs and industries are actually decent to work in? And if you’ve ended up in a career you find fulfilling, what brought you to it? Or are the people complaining online usually doing so because it’s easier to recognize problems with your job than the positive aspects? I am not looking for a career without any shortcomings, but just curious what some roles are that people find they and other are very happy with.

I work in finance (FP&A). I was told that I was unprofessional/informal in my interactions with my colleagues. This criticism included a colleague of mine as well that I work closely with on projects. (She is from a country where people are very direct.) The reason it was shared with me is so that I would be cognizant of how I am being perceived so it does not hinder my growth. There were no specific examples (written or verbal) about how I was unprofessional or informal. There were no suggestions of how to improve these interactions either. 

Some of you asked if it had to do with my appearance. I'm skeptical it would be this. I wear a button down/polo and slacks everyday with either Chelsea boots or Brooks. I shower every night (sometimes in the morning too) and wear deodorant. I shave three times a week and I don't have a beard or mustache. I do wear the same pair of pants 3 days in a row before cycling them out though, so maybe I'll stop doing that.

Some of you suggested that my inclination to privacy could be a factor given that I don't share my thoughts unless specifically asked and I don't tell people much about my life or pry into theirs. 

I reread my peer and manager feedback from the spring. I was complimented on my positive attitude and ability to build relationships with other teams. I was encouraged to speak up more rather than keeping thoughts to myself. Next week, I'm going to send an email to my manager to ask for specific examples and suggestions on how I can improve. I don't expect much to come out of it, but this situation has really made me want to double-down on my current approach of keeping to myself.

I received feedback at work that I'm unprofessional, how do I proceed to repair my image?

So I have been a student all my life- just wrapping up my PhD now. Have no student debt, thankfully. I recently got a job offer for around 120k, based in Boston. I want to understand how much will I actually be getting, with taxes and everything, and how to best save, invest, everything. I know Boston is expensive, but I still want to be as economical as possible. 

My parents are in a different country, not that finance savvy (they have their savings in a savings account with an interest rate that doesn’t even keep up with inflation- they actively discourage investing since they had some losses in their youth) so I am coming to Reddit for advice. 

With my grad student stipend, I have managed to set aside $30k- hopefully it will help with moving, and also my wedding that is this year.

Got my first real job at 28. What do I do???

Third time hearing basically the same thing and it’s starting to annoy me. everyone appreciates what you do, but you need to be more visible.

honestly starting to hate that sentence.

I'm the person people come to when  nobody knows who owns something, when a customer issue is weird enough that the normal process doesn't work. And apparently that's also the problem.

I fix things, everyone moves on, and nothing about it really exists afterward.

The person who got promoted is good. genuinely. This isn't one of those "my coworker sucks and got promoted" posts. But they are way better at making sure people know what they're doing. updates, summaries, sharing wins, all of it.

I always thought that stuff was kind of performative. Like the work should speak for itself. Then I wrote my self review and honestly it was embarrassing. Months of actual work turned into supported team priorities and improved processes. I made myself sound like a job description.

So yeah. apparently doing the work and making sure people know about the work are two different skills and I only learned one of them.

Anyone figure out how to do this without feeling like you're constantly selling yourself?

Thought I’d share a different (and possibly slightly unpopular) perspective.

  
Back in late 2017 to early 2018, we hit traditional FI. I was mid 30s, and we’d accumulated enough to support a 3.5-4% withdrawal rate. Yay.

We had always been frugal savers, had decent jobs, and I’d discovered MMM back in 2014/5, and it all made sense.

However, work was pretty interesting and engaging, and I did not feel a need to stop, so I kept going.

Now, about 8-9 years later, I would say that I’m very happy with my decision.

  
A few things play into this:

1) My life, situation, and value structure have changed. I ended up having kids, wanting and needing to travel a bunch more (aging parents and distant family), and a few things like that. With some of this, expenses have grown, and likely faster than the market would have supported. Sure, I could manage this as it is discretionary, but I’m happy not having to.

2) Career continued to grow, and has been interesting. My job and responsibilities have grown. I’ve been exposed to things that are interesting, challenging, and eye opening. It’s the kind of thing you can’t really explain without experiencing it. There’s nothing quite like a broad perspective!

3) Net worth has grown a bynch (earning and investing, etc). This has opened doors that would otherwise have been closed. It’s allowed me to help family, and be less constrained by finances if I want to do things.  It has increased our safety net a bunch.

4) I’ve continued to enjoy life!

At this point, I could throw in the towel at any point, and live a good life with low financial risk. But I don’t seriously consider it yet (fleeting moments when I’m annoyed with work aside). I think being in this position allows me to have more fun at work, too, and do a better job.

The net of it is that for me, retiring when I first could have would, I think, have been a real mistake. It was tempting at the time, and follows the FIRE narrative, but I’m very glad I didn’t!

I think the cautionary tale here is that when you’re young, it’s really hard to predict what will matter in many years time. While I’m 100% in favor of reaching FI as quickly as possible, I think the RE step should be treated with caution. Better, IMO, to convert the FI into a career that drives meaningful satisfaction. At some point the calculus will change (I can’t imagine wanting to work in my 50s, for e.g.), but work doesn’t have to be crappy!

We closed out our New York live show on May 28 with a panel that featured three of our favorite Substackers: James van Geelen of Citrini Research, Sam Ro, founder of The TKer, and journalist Jasmine Sun. They've all been Odd Lots guests before, and we wanted to get them together to discuss how journalists and analysts are supposed to cover this incredibly strange and highly pressurized moment in markets. Not only has AI basically infected every corner of the world, the media included, but there's just so much news that it's sometimes hard to figure out what the focus should be. We closed out our New York live show on May 28 with a panel that featured three of our favorite Substackers: James van Geelen of Citrini Research, Sam Ro, founder of The TKer, and journalist Jasmine Sun. They&#39;ve all been Odd Lots guests before, and we wanted to get them together to discuss how journalists and analysts are supposed to cover this incredibly strange and highly pressurized moment in markets. Not only has AI basically infected every corner of the world, the media included, but there&#39;s just so much news that it&#39;s sometimes hard to figure out what the focus should be.
